The US Forest Service (USFS) considers nonnative, invasive species to be a major threat to National Forests. Noxious weeds are a type of invasive weed that can be harmful to the environment, people, animals, crops, soil and livestock health. They can also alter species diversity, hydrology, nutrient cycling, and natural disturbance patterns, such as the frequency and intensity of wildfires.
To help reduce the spread of noxious weeds, the USFS, Bureau of Land Management, and State lands require the use of certified forage. This means that each bale or bag of feed must have an approved NWSFF marker. You can help by:
- Feeding ride and pack animals certified NWSFF hay at least three days before going on federal lands
- Using certified NWSFF hay and straw for 4-H and rodeo events at county fairgrounds
- Choosing certified NWSFF hay or straw for use on your own property
