During the 2025 Legislative session, a draft bill was submitted to revamp the current weed act. Due to the complexity within statute regarding noxious weeds, MWCA encouraged the bill drafter to submit for an interim study bill.
In Montana, an interim study bill is a legislative proposal that directs an interim committee to examine a specific issue in depth during the period between legislative sessions. These studies are conducted to gather information, analyze potential solutions, and inform future legislation. Interim committees are formed to conduct these studies, and they often involve public input and expert testimony.
We are pleased to announce that this study bill was signed by the governor and has been summitted to the Environmental Quality Council (EQC). SJ42 was discussed by this committee on Tuesday, July 29, and was funded for a part time staffer and Option B. (Please see chart below to see the options the committee decides on).

MWCA was listed as a cooperator/partner in this study, but we have not heard any more information regarding the study other than they plan to meet later this fall. We will keep you posted on the progress of this study. If you wish to see the study bill draft, please visit here.
